The Celts were western Europeans who lived between 500 B.C. and 400 A.D. Very few of their written records survive, but they left behind a rich legacy of symbols and imagery. Through the years the meanings of some of these symbols have been lost, but many of them were documented by the Romans, who conquered the Celts as part of the Roman Empire. The Celtic Knot is probably the best known Celtic sign. Since it is very difficult to pick out a beginning or an ending in the Celtic Knot, most experts agree that it respresents timelessness and eternity.
